Business Signage Standards: Regulations You Cannot Afford to Ignore

05/05/2026

Many businesses invest tens of millions of dong in signage, only to be forced to take it down within weeks because it fails to meet the legal requirements for business signage in Vietnam. Beyond the financial cost, a violation damages brand image at the very first point of contact with customers.

    1. Why Do Business Signage Standards Matter?

Business signage standards are the set of legal and technical requirements that every commercial sign in Vietnam must comply with - covering displayed content, dimensions, installation location and materials used.

There are two practical reasons these standards cannot be ignored:

Legal risk: Decree 72/2023/NĐ-CP clearly sets out the conditions under which businesses may display signage at their headquarters, branches and business premises. Violations can result in administrative fines of 5 to 20 million VND and a mandatory removal order. This is a risk that is entirely avoidable with proper guidance at the design stage.

Brand impact: Non-compliant signage - with fonts that cannot be read from a distance, or colors that bleed due to poor materials - silently undermines brand recognition in ways many business owners never measure.

    2. Key Criteria for Legally and Technically Compliant Business Signage

As the first thing customers see, business signage must satisfy both aesthetic and technical requirements. What are the essential criteria?

    2.1. Mandatory Display Content

Under current regulations, business signage must clearly display all of the following information in Vietnamese:

    • The business name exactly as registered (an English name or abbreviation may appear on a secondary line in a smaller size).
    • The business type (limited liability company, joint-stock company, sole proprietorship, etc.).
    • The address of the registered office or branch.
    • A telephone number or website (not mandatory but recommended).

    2.2. Signage Dimensions

There is no single fixed size that applies to all cases, but current regulations impose specific limits depending on the installation context:

    Installation location Permitted dimensions
Sign attached to a building facade of fewer than 3 storeys Width no greater than the facade width; height ≤ 1.0 m
Sign attached to a building facade of 3 storeys or more Width no greater than the facade width; height ≤ 2.0 m
Sign mounted on a rooftop Sign height ≤ 4.0 m; must not obstruct windows or balconies
Freestanding pylon sign Overall height (including base) subject to local planning regulations

    2.3. Language Requirements

This is an area where FDI companies and international brands frequently make mistakes. Under the Law on Advertising and its implementing decrees:

    • Vietnamese must appear on the sign - including for foreign brands.
    • Where bilingual text is used (Vietnamese and English), the Vietnamese text must be the same size as or larger than the foreign language text.
    • Foreign language text cannot fully replace Vietnamese on signage at any business premises operating in Vietnam.

    2.4. Location and Safety Clearances

Even the most visually impressive sign cannot be installed arbitrarily. Key location requirements include:

    • Signs must not obstruct traffic signs, signal lights or public directional signage.
    • Signs must not protrude beyond the permitted boundary under urban planning rules (typically 0.2–0.5 m from the outer wall).
    • Illuminated signs must not cause glare that affects road safety.
    • Signs must not obstruct windows or emergency exits of adjacent buildings.

    2.5. Legal Documentation Before Installation

This is the most important step - and the one most often overlooked. Depending on the location and type of sign, the following may be required:

    • An outdoor advertising permit (for large-format signs or signs on major road frontages), issued by the Department of Culture and Sports.
    • Structural safety certification from a qualified technical consultant (for large elevated signs).
    • Notification to the local ward or commune People's Committee (for small-scale signs at business premises).

The permit process typically takes 7–14 working days. A reputable signage contractor will manage all of this documentation on your behalf.

    4. Frequently Asked Questions About Business Signage Standards

    - Does business signage require a permit?

It depends on the size and location. Signs with a large surface area (generally 20 m² or more) or those installed on major road frontages typically require an outdoor advertising permit issued by the Department of Culture and Sports. Smaller signs at business premises generally only require notification to the local ward or commune People's Committee.

    - Can a business sign display an English name?

Yes, but Vietnamese must appear alongside it and must be the same size as or larger than the English name. This is a mandatory requirement under the current Law on Advertising and applies to foreign brands operating in Vietnam.

    - What is the minimum letter size for business signage?

There is no specific minimum set by law, but industry technical standards recommend a letter height of at least 20 cm for outdoor signs to be legible from 5–10 metres away, and at least 10 cm for indoor signs. For raised letter signage, a relief depth of 5–10 cm produces the best visual effect.

Understanding business signage standards thoroughly not only protects you from legal risk - it lays the foundation for building lasting brand recognition at the very first touchpoint with your customers. From dimensions and materials to legal documentation, every element plays its own role and none can be treated lightly.
